Perry World House’s international security program will focus on the most pressing foreign affairs and security issues of the 21st century.
The last several years have changed the global security landscape in dramatic ways: a revanchist China seeking to reshape the international order in its favor; a full-scale war in Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine; a terror attack in Israel and the resulting war in Gaza; the consequences of advances in artificial intelligence and related technologies; and a changing political landscape in Iran. A new authoritarian axis of cooperation between global pariah states—Russia, Iran, and North Korea—with China is growing, enabling these regimes economically, militarily, and politically.
The program will connect Perry World House and the broader global affairs community on pressing international security issues through public programs, visitors, conferences, and workshops. Guided in part by Michael Horowitz, the international security program will focus on three broad regional security arenas (Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and Europe) as well as four thematic spaces (maritime security; the future of defense reform; strategic competition; and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and biotechnology).
Emerging Technologies and Global Politics Project
The Emerging Technologies and Global Politics Project is researching how a new generation of technologies is shaping global affairs, from how economies and societies function to the way that militaries will operate. This interdisciplinary, multi-method effort is led by Director and Richard Perry Professor Michael C. Horowitz and is composed of research teams studying the intersection of emerging technologies and global politics across a variety of different research areas.
