The COVID-19 pandemic has already closed borders, battered the economy, overwhelmed critical health infrastructure, and killed thousands.

In the longer run, the virus appears likely to leave lasting and potentially major effects on the global order itself: on the balance of power, the health of international institutions, and more.

It is a good time to start asking questions about COVID-19's impact on international affairs. How are the great powers competing for world recognition, and how are they exploiting each other’s weaknesses in this time of crisis? On the other hand, how might they cooperate to address the common threat to humanity? Finally, how might this crisis reshape geopolitical dynamics in the long run?

In this virtual edition of The World Today, Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster (retired), former National Security Advisor, will discuss these questions and more with Michael Horowitz, the Interim Director of Perry World House and Professor of Political Science.
