A group of leading scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from Penn and elsewhere will discuss where things stand with the UN Sustainable Development Goals in advance of the high-level review scheduled for July in New York. The panelists will also present recent research by Penn faculty and fellows on topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Participants include:
- Eugenie Birch, Co-Director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research, is president of the General Assembly of Partners (GAP), the engagement platform for the implementation of the UN’s New Urban Agenda and associated global agreements.
- William Burke-White, Inaugural Director of Perry World House and Richard Perry Professor and Professor of Law, is an expert on international law and global governance who served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2011 on the State Department Policy Planning Staff.
- Mark Alan Hughes, is a Professor of Practice at PennDesign, Faculty Director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. He was the Chief Policy Adviser to Mayor Michael Nutter and the founding Director of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia.
- Anne Richard, a former Perry World House Visiting Fellow and served as Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration.
In addition to discussing the upcoming UN review, the panelists will introduce for the first time to the Washington community a series of papers by Penn faculty and outside experts on topics like climate change, urban design, sustainable development, and more. The Penn: Current Research on Sustainable Urban Development paper series is available for download (http://penniur.upenn.edu/wuf9) and discussion on June 25.
The Washington Brief will take place at the Penn-Biden Center in Washington at 101 Constitution Avenue, NW, 6th Floor. The briefing is jointly organized by three Penn institutes whose work relates to the Sustainable Development Goals -- Penn Institute for Urban Research, The Kleinman Center for Energy Policy, and Perry World House.
