By Perry World House

In the lead-up to what promises to be an exciting and eventful 2019-20 academic year, the team at Perry World House, the University of Pennsylvania’s global affairs hub, is changing and growing. To continue to provide world-class programming and world-changing ideas, our team has been augmented with experts in communications, research, and management.

Michael C. Horowitz, Professor of Political Science and previously Associate Director of Perry World House, will be Interim Director for the year. After five years of building Perry World House, Professor William Burke-White, our Inaugural Director, will be taking a sabbatical from Penn to serve as a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. He will be working on a book on the new geography of global governance and strengthening Perry World House’s existing partnership with Brookings.

Mike has helped design and lead Perry World House from the beginning. As our inaugural Associate Director, he has been integral to the direction of the Global Order research theme, the creation and continuation of the World House Student Fellows program, and the Postdoctoral Fellows program. Through it all, Mike has continued his research on how emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence—are shaping global politics, becoming a recognized expert in both the academic and policy worlds.

In addition to a new leader, we’ve added several new team members to the Penn community, including:

  • Lauren Kahn, Research Fellow. A recent Penn graduate, Lauren received her B.A. in international relations with a concentration in foreign policy and security studies. As a one-year fellow, she will support Perry World House’s intellectual life and student programming while continuing research around the intersection between science, technology, and war.
  • Alice Krainock, Communications Coordinator. Alice recently moved to the United States from the United Kingdom, where she gained extensive experience working in communications for the German and British governments. Prior to joining Perry World House, she worked as a communications consultant for a globally-oriented nonprofit here in Philadelphia.
  • Christian Ruhl, Program Associate for Global Order. After completing two master’s degrees from the University of Cambridge, Christian will bring his interest in history, international relations, and technology to the task of coordinating programming and inquiry for the Global Order research theme.
  • Michaela Winch-Peterson, Business and Administrative Coordinator. To provide administrative support and travel and logistics coordination for all visitors to Perry World House, Michaela brings extensive experience from her work as an executive assistant at a large non-profit and as a department assistant at a large university.

Together, we will continue to further Perry World House’s mission to bring the academic knowledge of Penn to bear on some of the world’s most pressing global policy challenges, and to foster international policy engagement within and beyond the campus community. We look forward to seeing you at Perry World House this year.
